Duchess of Edinburgh Brings Festive Cheer to Royal Engagement with Playful Christmas Surprise

The Duchess of Edinburgh attended a Christmas event at Disability Initiative in Camberley, Surrey, today, where she embraced the festive spirit by wearing a Santa Claus hat.

Photos from the visit showed Sophie decorating Christmas cookies in front of a sign that read: “HRH Magnificent Patron.”

During the event, the Duchess also joined volunteers and clients in playing percussion instruments, taking part in a warm and joyful celebration.

It’s understood that the activities were specially designed to meet the needs of adults with disabilities, with a focus on supporting wellbeing and improving overall quality of life.

Sophie, 60, chose a £295 floral dress by Lexy London for the occasion — a piece she first wore earlier this month at Princess Kate’s Christmas carol service.

She completed the look with £162 earrings from Giulia Barela, previously worn during a visit to Nepal earlier this year, along with a classic Chanel watch. The Duchess finished her outfit with £359 suede boots by Penelope Chilvers, which are currently reduced to £251.

The charity’s website notes: “Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Edinburgh has been Patron of Disability Initiative since 2003.”

The statement continued: “A regular visitor, her support and encouragement have made a remarkable impact on everyone involved. She takes a genuine interest in each individual and in every aspect of our work.”

Sophie has maintained a close relationship with the charity over the years. For instance, when she was elevated from Countess of Wessex to Duchess of Edinburgh in 2023, Disability Initiative released a warm and congratulatory message in her honour.

The message read: “All of us at DI are so proud of our Patron, Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Edinburgh. Congratulations on your new title, Ma’am.”

Disability Initiative describes itself as “an established charity, striving to empower adults with disabilities to achieve their personal goals through specialised, tailored services.”

The statement goes on to explain: “We offer specialised services and support for disabled adults with complex physical disabilities and/or acquired brain injuries.”

It adds: “DI is committed to providing high-quality care and slow-stream rehabilitation, while upholding personal choice, dignity, and independence.”

The charity also notes: “Our Resource Centres create a lively, forward-thinking, and dynamic setting where local communities open up a wide range of opportunities, allowing every individual the chance to flourish.”
