There’s reportedly some tension between King Charles and Prince William — and this time, it has nothing to do with Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor.
According to the Daily Mail, the father and son are said to be experiencing strain in their working relationship. The tension apparently began when Prince William asked the King if he could reduce his number of official royal engagements last year — but Charles firmly refused, telling his son to “think again.”
The report also mentions “underlying tension” between the two, citing their “fiery tempers” as a source of friction. Palace insiders claim that working for King Charles can feel like “treading on eggshells,” while Prince William’s occasional mood swings are said to make him “difficult to handle.”
According to royal insiders, the tension between King Charles and Prince William stems from a series of disagreements and personal frustrations over the past year.
One notable example involves William’s decision to fly his entire family by helicopter in 2024, something that reportedly infuriated the King. Royal protocol traditionally forbids heirs to the throne from flying together in the same aircraft for safety reasons. The King was said to be so concerned that he asked a senior aide to obtain William’s written acknowledgement of the risks — a request that William flatly refused.

Another incident that ruffled feathers was during the coronation in 2023, when William allegedly arrived late after filming social media content. The delay annoyed Charles, who reportedly found the move disrespectful given the gravity of the day.
The King has also grown frustrated that William refuses to wear a kilt while in Scotland, despite his father’s repeated encouragements to do so. As one insider put it, “The King has repeatedly urged him, yet William won’t budge.”
The situation has reportedly become so uncomfortable that Charles now avoids directly confronting his son about work matters, instead delegating sensitive conversations to senior aides. According to palace sources, “the monarch will often leave senior aides to raise tough work issues with William.”
