Princess Kate Skillfully Sidesteps a Potentially Awkward Moment with Queen Camilla During State Visit

Queen Camilla shared a touching moment with Princess Catherine as she and Prince William welcomed the German President and First Lady to the UK for a state visit. After greeting Frank-Walter Steinmeier and his wife, Elke Büdenbender, at Heathrow Airport, the group travelled to Windsor Castle to meet the King and Queen.

As they stepped onto the dais in the castle’s Quadrangle, the President and First Lady walked ahead of the Prince and Princess to reunite with their official hosts. While William and Catherine moved to their position at the side, the Princess dipped into a respectful curtsey — a gesture initially missed by Camilla, who was mid-conversation with the First Lady.

With grace and ease, Catherine caught the Queen’s eye and offered a second deep curtsey. Camilla responded with a warm smile and blew her a kiss, creating a charming and affectionate moment between the two royal women.

As with President Trump’s visit to the UK in September, she and Prince William once again had the honour of acting as chaperones for the incoming guests, greeting them on arrival and accompanying them to Windsor for the official welcome.

The arrival ceremony featured a carriage procession through the town, a Guard of Honour who delivered a Royal Salute, and performances by the regimental band, which played both the German and British national anthems.

The King then joined the President to inspect the Guard of Honour before the group moved inside the Castle for a private lunch.

Later in the day, they will view a curated selection of items from the Royal Collection Trust that hold historical ties to Germany.

This evening, a glittering state banquet will take place in St George’s Hall, where both the King and President Steinmeier will deliver speeches. Several other members of the Royal Family are expected to attend, with the female royals wearing tiaras and the men in formal evening attire.
