If the latest speculation proves accurate, Meghan Markle certainly appears prepared to face whatever reaction awaits her in Britain. After years of controversy and a highly publicised fallout with the Royal Family, returning for an extended stay is unlikely to be a quiet affair.
The moment it emerged that Prince Harry, 41, and Meghan, 45, were bringing their lengthy period away from Britain to an end, one question immediately returned to the forefront: could their unexpected homecoming finally ease the deep divisions that have developed within the family?
Particular attention will inevitably fall on Harry and Meghan’s relationship with Prince William and Princess Catherine, as well as Queen Camilla, all of whom have found themselves caught up in the tensions surrounding the Sussexes over recent years.
It is a remarkable contrast to the image the two couples once presented. Harry, Meghan, William and Catherine were famously nicknamed the ‘Fab Four’, borrowing the celebrated label associated with The Beatles. At the height of their friendship, the four royals appeared remarkably close, regularly attending engagements together and giving the impression of a united younger generation of the monarchy.
Back in 2009, William and Harry formally joined forces for their charitable work by creating The Foundation of Prince William and Prince Harry. Catherine and Meghan later became part of the organisation, which eventually operated under the much broader name The Royal Foundation of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

The united front did not last. Harry’s 2023 memoir Spare offered his version of how relations between the two couples gradually deteriorated, recounting a string of disagreements and uncomfortable encounters that contributed to their eventual separation.
Harry portrayed several of those incidents as deeply hurtful moments that left lasting scars. To others, however, some of the disputes he described might sound more like the kind of family arguments and resentments that can develop between siblings and their partners.
Whatever their origins, the disagreements eventually developed into something far more serious. Relations became increasingly hostile after Harry and Meghan moved to the United States and began speaking publicly about their experiences within the monarchy. Their interviews and media appearances were followed by Spare, in which Harry repeatedly suggested that William and Catherine had not always treated him fairly.
Now that the Sussexes are reportedly spending an extended period back in Britain, attention has inevitably turned to what happens next. Could physical proximity finally provide an opportunity to repair years of damage, or will the divisions between the two sides become even more firmly established?
Any reconciliation would also raise the question of what each side would be prepared to forgive and what compromises they might be willing to make.
According to recent claims, Meghan does want to establish a more peaceful relationship with the Royal Family following her return to Britain. However, she reportedly has no intention of pursuing reconciliation at any cost.
The National Examiner reports that the Duchess of Sussex would like to improve her relationship with Catherine, 44, although “not if it means she has to beg”.
A source further claimed that “Meghan isn’t going to grovel to anybody, least of all Kate,” adding that the Duchess maintains “very strong boundaries” as a way of protecting herself following experiences she found traumatic.
If the reports are accurate, the suggestion that Meghan expects reconciliation on these terms is likely to raise more than a few eyebrows.
Since Harry and Meghan stepped away from royal duties, William and Catherine have largely avoided publicly responding to the accusations and criticism directed at them. The Sussexes, meanwhile, have repeatedly discussed their experiences with the Royal Family through lucrative interviews, television projects and Harry’s memoir.
One particularly memorable moment came in Harry and Meghan’s 2022 Netflix documentary series, when Meghan reflected on her first encounter with William and Catherine. She recalled being casually dressed in ripped jeans and attempting to greet them with a hug, before suggesting that the atmosphere behind palace doors was considerably more formal than she had anticipated.
Meghan explained: “I didn’t realise that’s really jarring for a lot of Brits. I guess I started to understand very quickly that the formality on the outside carried through on the inside.”
Although delivered almost casually, the observation could easily be interpreted as another pointed criticism of William and Catherine. It also fitted neatly into the wider narrative Meghan was presenting to an American audience about the cultural differences and formality she encountered after entering royal life.
Against that background, claims that Meghan now wants to rebuild bridges while refusing to make the first major concession may prove difficult for her critics to accept.
Indeed, some might argue that after years of very public revelations from the Sussex camp while William and Catherine remained publicly silent, Meghan should be prepared to show considerably more humility if she genuinely wants the relationship to recover.
