William to Step Out Alone for Major Royal Engagement as Harry Celebrates His Birthday

Prince William will be focused on royal duties rather than his younger brother’s birthday on Tuesday, with the Prince of Wales scheduled to travel to Princetown for a solo engagement.

During the visit, William will officially unveil a regeneration initiative aimed at supporting the remote Dartmoor community, situated near Dartmoor Prison. Through the new Princetown Community Fund, £250,000 will be made available for projects created and led by local people, with funding directed towards social, economic and environmental improvements.

The future King will also spend time at Gather & Moor, a recently established cultural and community centre serving the area. There, he is expected to speak with representatives from Princetown Press, a local heritage business with strong connections to the community.

William’s programme will continue with a visit to a youth club, where he will meet residents and hear about the work being carried out for younger people in Princetown. The facility recently benefited from financial support provided by the Duchy of Cornwall, which helped fund improvements to the club and its amenities.

The engagement falls on Prince Harry’s birthday, meaning William will be carrying out his public responsibilities in Princetown while his younger brother marks the occasion.

William’s visit to Princetown forms part of a much broader ambition to use the Duchy of Cornwall to deliver tangible benefits for communities and the environment.

Plans revealed in May showed that the Prince of Wales intends to direct around £500 million over the coming decade towards projects addressing issues such as housing and environmental improvement. Much of that investment is expected to be generated through the sale of land within the Duchy of Cornwall’s property portfolio, which produces an annual income of around £23 million.

Will Bax, who has served as the Duchy’s chief executive since 2024, previously explained to The Times that decisions about its assets are increasingly being judged by whether they can create meaningful benefits for the places and people involved.

He said: “If we don’t see an opportunity for positive impact, then perhaps we don’t need to be a part of that place.”

Explaining the thinking behind the proposed asset sales, Bax said the Duchy wants to concentrate its resources in places where its involvement can deliver meaningful improvements for communities and the environment.

He said: “But where there is social need and where there is environmental challenge and where there is an opportunity to enable change, then we’ll be a great partner in working with people to achieve that.”

William’s rеsponse to Prince Harry’s rеturn

Prince Harry caught royal watchers off guard last month when he announced that he and Meghan would relocate their family back to Britain. The move also brought a major change for Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, who have now been enrolled at a school in the UK.

Since returning at the end of August, Harry is understood to have been communicating with King Charles. His relationship with Prince William, however, remains far more complicated, and there has been little indication that the estranged brothers have resumed contact.

Tensions between William and Harry have persisted since the Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepped away from senior royal duties in 2020, making the prospect of an immediate reconciliation between the siblings appear remote.

Discussing what could happen next on HELLO!’s A Right Royal Podcast, royal editor Emily Nash suggested that rebuilding family relationships is unlikely to happen quickly and described the process as “one step at a time”.

For the moment, she believes Harry and Meghan’s priority is establishing a stable routine for their family following such a significant move and allowing Archie and Lilibet to adjust to their new surroundings.

Emily explained: “I think this is going to be very much one step at a time, and from people I’ve been speaking to who know them, I think they’re very much working on the basis of let’s get the children settled, let’s get started on what we want to do, and then the rest is something to consider down the line.”

Emily suggested that Harry’s renewed connection with his father could prove particularly significant. Having a functioning relationship with the monarch, she argued, may make the wider process of rebuilding family ties somewhat easier.

She explained: “But, crucial to them is the relationship with the King. You can’t go any higher than him. And if you have him on side and you are spending time with him, then that does half of the work for you.”

However, repairing Harry’s relationship with Charles would not automatically resolve the tensions that remain elsewhere in the Royal Family. Emily noted that continued distance from the Sussexes could eventually leave other relatives facing questions about whether they are prepared to move forward, although she stressed that there are substantial reasons for the lingering hurt.

She said: “There is a risk, I think, of other members of the family continuing to avoid them, it might make them look petty or unforgiving. Now, there’s a lot that would need to be forgiven. Let’s be honest about this, and you can absolutely understand why William and Kate might never want to go there.”

Harry and Meghan’s departure from working royal life, Emily argued, did not affect only the couple themselves. Their decision altered the responsibilities facing their generation of the monarchy and potentially increased the future burden placed on William and Catherine’s children.

She continued: “You know, their decision to leave affected that whole generation of the royal family. And it’s left a lot of responsibility on not just William’s shoulders, but on those of his children.”

Beyond their departure, years of public revelations have added further layers to the dispute. Harry and Meghan have spoken openly about their experiences with William and Catherine, while Harry’s memoir included particularly personal allegations about clashes with his brother.

Emily added: “And then you’ve got all the things that they said, about how they were too formal and they didn’t like being hugged. William pushed Harry into a dog bowl, broke his necklace. It’s endless.”
