Why Prince William Wore His Red Poppy on His Cap Instead of His Uniform

During the Royal Family’s annual Remembrance Sunday commemorations at the Cenotaph, Prince William followed the tradition established by his father, King Charles, as he stepped forward to lay a wreath.

Meanwhile, Kate Middleton observed the solemn ceremony from the balcony of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.

The wreath presented by William was previously used by Charles during his time as Prince of Wales. It features the Prince of Wales feathers and a ribbon in traditional Welsh red.

Unlike other members of the Royal Family, Prince William chose not to display the traditional red remembrance poppy on his uniform. Instead, he attached the symbolic flower to his military cap.

The different placement was likely a practical choice, as his Lieutenant Colonel of the Blues and Royals uniform features a bright red collar, making the crimson poppy difficult to distinguish against the fabric.

Meanwhile, Princess Kate wore a brooch featuring three red poppies on her Catherine Walker coat. The flowers are believed to symbolise either the three branches of the Armed Forces — the Army, Royal Navy and Royal Air Force — or commemorate her great-grandmother’s three brothers, who lost their lives during the First World War.

Prince William has held several honorary military titles and appointments, having also served in the Armed Forces between 2006 and 2013.

Speaking about the importance of Remembrance last year, the Prince of Wales reflected on how honouring those who served helps preserve their legacy.

“When we remember, we connect with service in a personal way. We learn from the courage of others, and we carry their stories forward, so they are not forgotten. It’s not just about the past — it’s about shaping who we become in the future,” he said.

He continued: “Remembrance teaches us empathy, resilience, and responsibility. And when we wear a red poppy or take a moment of silence, we are saying, ‘Thank you. We have not forgotten, and we will not forget.’”
