As Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales mark 15 years of marriage on April 29, it offers a moment to look back on what they’ve built together—and everything they’ve faced along the way. It also opens the door to thinking about what lies ahead for them, both as a married couple and as the future King and Queen.
Since their wedding at Westminster Abbey in 2011, their relationship has continued to grow stronger. Over the years, Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales have come to be seen as one of the most stable and committed pairs in the royal family, while raising their three children together.
That said, their journey hasn’t been without hardship. One of the most difficult moments came in early 2024, when Catherine, Princess of Wales faced a serious cancer diagnosis. According to royal commentator and author Katie Nicholl, the experience ultimately strengthened their connection and brought a renewed sense of focus to their family life.
“It is undoubtedly one of the toughest things a couple can go through, but the foundations they have built over the years stood them in good stead to cope together and come out stronger,” she says. “They have a relationship rooted in a firm friendship, which has transitioned and changed over the years, but ultimately they have grown together as a couple.”
At a time when both his wife and his father, King Charles III, were undergoing cancer treatment, Prince William spoke openly about their strength, while also admitting the emotional strain it placed on the family. “I’m so proud of my wife, I’m proud of my father, for handling the things that they have done,” he said. “But from a personal family point of view, it’s been brutal.”
In recent months, the royal family has been navigating one of its most challenging periods in years, following controversy surrounding Prince Andrew and his alleged links to Jeffrey Epstein, along with legal scrutiny tied to misconduct allegations.
Despite the situation, Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales have presented a united front. On February 19, through their spokesperson, they issued a brief but clear message: “I can confirm The Prince and Princess have been deeply concerned by the continuing revelations. Their thoughts remain focused on the victims.”
With strong support from Catherine, Princess of Wales, Prince William is widely seen as playing a key role in influencing King Charles III’s decision to remove Prince Andrew from royal duties and his residence at Royal Lodge.
“William is thinking about when he takes the top job, and what he can do to protect and guide the royal family in the future. But for now, they want to carry on as normal at all costs, while staying as distant from Andrew as possible,” says royal expert Duncan Larcombe. “There is no doubt that William is stepping up to effectively be number two in the family, and that King Charles trusts and values his opinion.”
Sources suggest that Catherine, Princess of Wales has played a vital role in supporting Prince William during the fallout surrounding Prince Andrew, as well as in the aftermath of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stepping back from royal duties in 2020—an episode that brought significant strain to the family.
“Kate’s first concern has always been William, and giving him support,” says Katie Nicholl, author of Kate: The Future Queen. “That may take the form of allowing him the time and space to deal with things privately, or providing him with a safe space in which to relax and to take his mind off things, maybe over a game with the children or getting outdoors for a long walk in nature.”
The couple presented a strong, united front during the Commonwealth Day Service on March 9, appearing alongside King Charles III, Queen Camilla and Anne, Princess Royal. It marked the family’s first major public appearance following the controversy involving Prince Andrew.
Just days later, Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales were seen in high spirits again—this time in Bermondsey, South London—sharing laughs as they poured pints together during a public outing.
During their 2010 engagement interview, Prince William gave a glimpse into their dynamic, saying: “She’s got a really naughty sense of humour which kind of helps me because I’ve got a very dirty sense of humour.” According to Katie Nicholl, that shared sense of humor has helped them navigate even the more difficult periods in their relationship.
Royal commentator Richard Palmer shares a similar view, noting that their strong connection and positive energy reflect well on the future of the monarchy—especially during uncertain times. “All the signs point to them being very happy together and their marriage being very strong,” he says. “You can see it in their body language alone that they look united.”
“They clearly share a similar approach in what they want to achieve as a royal couple, and how they view the monarchy’s role going forward. They are a team in every way and there is an awful lot for them to celebrate on their anniversary this year.”
Katie Nicholl shares a similar view, emphasizing that their openness about personal struggles has helped them connect with the public, while also reflecting the strength of their bond.
“They have a very honest and open relationship, and communication is clearly key in that. They have made the time over the years to invest in their relationship, separate from their roles as parents and as working royals.”
“Of course, their children always come first for William and Kate, but in recent years they have also prioritised together-time, and spent long weekends together without the children.”
“The success of their relationship comes down to partnership and friendship, and the idea that they’re ‘in this together’. They have a busier calendar this year and I think we will see more of what they have always done brilliantly – representing the King and flying the flag for Great Britain and the royal family. When the moment comes for them to be King and Queen, they will absolutely be ready.”
